M2.2 Blog Assignment: Personal Care Products

Using the Safe Cosmetics Database, http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/, I first looked up my favorite cosmetic brand as I use quite a bit of their products - Benefit Cosmetics. I started using this brand as it was founded and headquartered right here in San Francisco. Since it was all started and developed here, it felt close to home and safe to use. They also do not do testing on animals, which is a huge plus for me. I was sad to see that my favorite mascara is on the list! The rating this product received was a "4", which is a moderate risk. I would need to research further as there is limited data for this and it makes me wonder why the other Benefit products do not show up on the website. Are they safe to use?

The second product I looked up is my mouth wash, ACT Advanced Care. This was highly recommended to me by my dentist and I have not used any other brands since. Before this, I was using Listerine, which would leave a burning sensation in my mouth. ACT feels gentle yet effective which is why I kept with this brand. I am not too surprised to see that the mouth wash has a moderate risk level of "3" as I have always known that it is composed of all kinds of chemicals.

This data base does not seem to encompass all cosmetic products as I have searched for other products but were unable to locate some of my products. However, it is useful that there is a ranking and there are some products that are listed as "EWG verified". This means that they meet EWG quality standards and free of EWG's chemical concerns.

I have always known of harmful chemicals in women's deodorants and cosmetics but never took the time to look up each of my product. This exercise has made me more aware of what I am putting onto my skin and is making me reconsider my favorite care products! I will be spending more time on this safety database to find more EWG verified products that I can try. I know that Beauty Counter is very careful with their chemicals and is also EWG verified so I will definitely be looking more into this!

This data base has been so helpful and I want to recommend this to everyone I know! Especially all my female friends who use beauty cosmetics everyday! The general community does not know of the harmful chemicals they are using everyday because they are being sold directly to us! Unfortunately, beauty cosmetics is not highly regulated. It is important that all women are aware and look further into this data base and make changes as necessary.

  1. Hi Jaclyn,
I love this website, too! I'm glad your two products came in as no higher than moderate. I noticed some products I wanted to find weren't on there either, so wonder if they're just not rated yet? Though it does seem like this site has been up for a long time so I am not sure why! That's so cool that your dentist recommended a safe product too. I feel like not all medical providers are in the know, but your dentist seems to be conscious of toxins!

  2. Great post! I'm happy to hear that both of your products were not higher than moderate. I too am worried about why some products weren't on the website when I completed my own research, makes me a little worried to use them. I have noticed that Listerine has a tingly sensation, which after yesterdays class is a total red-flag. Maybe I will try Act mouthwash when this bottle of Listerine runs out.
